"The Power of Diligence: Walking the Path of Spiritual and Temporal Success"

Proverbs 12:24 teaches us, “The hand of the diligent shall bear rule; but the slothful shall be under tribute.” This powerful verse invites us to recognize the eternal value of diligence. It’s not just about working hard but about doing so with purpose, faith, and a sincere desire to serve God and others. In a world full of distractions, choosing diligence sets us apart as true disciples of Jesus Christ and places us on the path of spiritual and temporal progress.

Since ancient times, the scriptures have emphasized the importance of effort. Job, with his example of righteousness, inspires us when he states, “The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat” (Proverbs 13:4). Through every small effort, God shows us His power to transform our actions into great outcomes. Paul also reminded us in Galatians 6:9: “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” The promise is clear: sustained effort always bears fruit.

The Book of Mormon reinforces this principle with Alma's words: “By small and simple things are great things brought to pass” (Alma 37:6). No matter how insignificant our actions may seem, every act of diligence contributes to God’s plan. This is complemented by the modern revelation in Doctrine and Covenants, where the Lord encourages us to be “anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will” (D&C 58:27-28). This command is not only a call to action but also an opportunity to demonstrate our faith and willingness to act without waiting for detailed instructions.

President Brigham Young said, “Diligence in daily duties opens the door to life’s great opportunities.” Isn’t it exciting to think that every small effort in our daily lives has the potential to become an eternal blessing? President Thomas S. Monson also challenged us to act when he taught, “Success is not a matter of chance. It is a matter of choice, determination, and diligence.” These words energize us and motivate us to take control of our lives, trusting that honest work will always be rewarded.

At another time, President Gordon B. Hinckley reminded us that “life does not reward those who are lazy or indifferent.” This message is a call to action, to strive in every task entrusted to us, and to recognize that our work, no matter how mundane it may seem, has a divine purpose. The words of the prophets are clear: diligence not only builds our character but also equips us to fulfill the Lord’s work and bless those around us.

Even outside the religious sphere, diligence has been recognized as an essential principle for progress. Francisco Bilbao, a Chilean philosopher, wrote, “Progress is the fruit of constant and collective effort.” His words remind us that our diligence not only impacts our lives but also our community and the world. Gabriela Mistral, another great Chilean thinker, declared, “Where there is work, there will be greatness.” What a powerful statement: our effort brings us closer to our own greatness and to the divine purpose God has for us.

As followers of Christ, we are called to be diligent in every aspect of our lives. Being diligent in prayer and scripture study connects us to Heavenly Father and strengthens us spiritually. Being diligent in serving others reflects the love of Christ and brings joy to both the giver and the receiver. Being diligent in our temporal responsibilities prepares us for greater opportunities and demonstrates our gratitude for the blessings we have received.

The promise of Proverbs 12:24 is firm and encouraging: the diligent shall rule. We will be blessed with confidence, success, and the constant guidance of the Holy Ghost. Every effort, no matter how small it may seem, will be seen and rewarded by our loving Heavenly Father. So, let us move forward with energy, faith, and purpose, knowing that our diligence will not only benefit us but also all those we serve along the way.
