In our journey through life as followers of Jesus Christ, there is one goal that should always guide our actions and decisions: to please the Lord. The Apostle Paul, in 2 Corinthians 5:9, teaches us a fundamental truth:
> "Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him."
This verse invites us to reflect on our priorities and efforts. Are we truly striving to please God at all times and in all places?
Pleasing God: An Eternal Goal
The gospel of Jesus Christ teaches us that our existence is not limited to this world. We live knowing that one day we will stand before our Heavenly Father. This knowledge should motivate us to live intentionally, striving to align our actions with His will.
President Gordon B. Hinckley, in a general conference in April 1997, said from Salt Lake City:
> "The Lord expects us to be a people of integrity, honesty, and faithfulness, in all times and in all places, even when no one is watching."
This statement emphasizes that pleasing the Lord is not just about grand public acts but also about small private acts of obedience and kindness.
Our Daily Purpose
At times, in the daily routine, we may forget this spiritual goal. We work, study, care for our families, and face challenges. However, every task, no matter how simple, can become an act of devotion if we perform it with a heart willing to please God.
President Thomas S. Monson, in October 2008, from the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, expressed:
> "When we serve the Lord with love and dedication, our burdens become light, and our souls find joy."
Serving God is not a burden but an opportunity to find peace and purpose.
How to Live to Please the Lord
1. Constant Prayer: Speaking with God daily helps us stay connected to His will.
2. Obedience to His Commandments: Obedience is a tangible expression of our love and devotion.
3. Service to Others: Through service, we follow Christ's example and please God.
4. Studying the Scriptures: God's word guides and inspires us to live according to His teachings.
The Book of Mormon also reinforces this teaching. In Mosiah 2:17, King Benjamin reminds us:
> "When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God."
A Personal Call
As we strive to please the Lord, we not only honor our Creator but also find joy in this life and hope in eternity. Each day is a new opportunity to renew our commitment and demonstrate, through our actions, that we are disciples of Christ.
I pray that the Lord will help me keep this goal in my heart and guide me in every decision. As I strive to be pleasing to Him, I hope to inspire others to do the same. As Paul said, whether we are "present or absent," may we always be faithful in our desire to please Him.
What will you do today to please the Lord?
